How Important is a ‘Healthy’ Relationship? The benefits of exercise when you’re single

It may not seem like your obvious Friday night dose of romance, but you could do a lot worse for your love life than heading to the gym for a workout.

Have you ever heard the saying ‘couples who sweat together stay together’? Well, it’s true. Studies have shown that when people join the gym alone, the drop out rate over the course of a year is 43%, but when people join together this is drastically reduced to 6.3%.

Here we take a look at just some of the reasons why exercise is important when looking for a ‘healthy’ relationship.

IT INCREASES CONFIDENCE

We know you’ve heard it before, but when you feel good about yourself; your confidence soars and shines through for all to see. Confidence is an extremely attractive quality when looking for love and after a few exercise classes you’re more likely to say ‘bring it on’ as opposed to ‘I’m not good enough’.

And we’re not just talking about physical appearance. Exercise means pushing yourself to the limits, stepping outside of your comfort zone and having faith in your abilities. Sounds a little bit like dating to us.

IT REDUCES STRESS

It’s well known that a healthy diet and exercise are good for physical health, but the benefits don’t stop there. Exercise is instrumental in keeping our minds healthy too.

When we exercise, we actively minimise the bodies stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenalin whilst at the same time releasing a rush of it’s natural feel-good hormones like endorphins and serotonin – aptly known as the love hormone.

Exercise improves our overall happiness. And the happier we are, the more able we are to attract and sustain positive relationships. Scientifically speaking, when you’re single and looking for love, exercise is a no-brainer for the head and the heart.

IT INCREASES YOUR SEX DRIVE

We’re going to say it again just in case you didn’t here us; exercise and eating the right foods increase your sex drive. Throw in a few endorphins and a hearty does of the love hormone and you’ve got yourself a hot mix!

Studies have shown that raised energy levels are attractive to the opposite sex, and women of all ages have been shown to be more sexually responsive after even a short burst of exercise. As for the gents, exercise increases testosterone levels, stimulating sexual desire. Exercise is in itself a kind of physical arousal.
